Washington Post, Secret CIA assessment says Russia was trying to help Trump win White House

The CIA has concluded in a secret assessment that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help Donald Trump win the presidency, rather than just to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral system, according to officials briefed on the matter.

Intelligence agencies have identified individuals with connections to the Russian government who provided WikiLeaks with thousands of hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and others, including Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, according to U.S. officials. Those officials described the individuals as actors known to the intelligence community and part of a wider Russian operation to boost Trump and hurt Clinton’s chances.

This is not necessarily new news as the allegations have been made for months. But now that the CIA report has been "leaked" to the WP, it has more weight. What has also been revealed is that Mitch McConnell blocked the Senate from investigating back in September. President Obama, meanwhile, has called for an investigation (for the public) and report before he leaves office. Donald Trump has been dismissive of all the allegations.

So what's next? The Obama report comes out in January and Trump will label it a political hack job. He will continue to turn the argument around so slickly as he has done to all his opponents. However, eventually Trump is going to have to deliver on his promises to make America great again, and it doesn't seem like he has the interests of Main Street and middle class workers in his selection of advisors and cabinet picks. He has been able to con his supporters up to now, and tribalism has ensured that almost no matter what they will always support him, facts be damned. Maybe...and maybe not...

One other characteristic of his working class white supporters is that they are intensely patriotic. If their lot in life doesn't improve they'll need someone to blame...a possible reason to dump Trump. The Russian connection could be it, maybe not to have him impeached but rather turn enough Republicans against him...to start doubting him. Basically Congress could function with a coalition of Democrats and centrist Republicans (are there any left?) to effectively stop many of Trump's extreme initiatives from going forward.

Maybe that's wishful thinking on my part, but if there is one thing that can stop the Trump Train is American's patriotism and their hate of communism, especially Putin. Make the public think Trump is Putin's lapdog. This is what Republicans did to Obama...making their supporters believe that he was a secret Muslim born in Kenya.

    Thoughts?

Schmidt, Trump already replied and said that the CIA does an lousy job as it did about Iraq having WMD weapons. There was already an fight on CNN about this with the awful Spicer GOP idiot. I hope Trump creates more and more enemy's this way and will be his undoing.

They woke up at MSNBC and said Trump follows what Napoleon said" L'etat ce moi" ( The country is "me")

So what is our response ? ? ? Nothing. We will cower like a third world country being bullied by a super power. Why is this ? Because we are no longer The United States of America. NOOO. We are Republican and Democrats and agreeing on anything might involve talking to each other. Here we sit victim of rape but the powerful rich guy did it and no-one will open their mouth. Take it in folks because this is what we have become. PATHETIC AND PITIFULLY SAD.

Again while I credit the Washington Post for its reporting on this issue, other media are just too ready to accept Trump's dismissive comments. As the Addicting Info article indicated, the intelligence community did not believe that Saddam Hussein had WMDs. This was a Dick Cheney manufactured tale that brought us into the war.

Trump is always trying to shift the narrative. When the Boing CEO questioned Trump's proposals on trade, Trump retaliated by suggesting that Boing was ripping off tax payers with a $4 billion Air Force One contract. Not true...the contract is for $170 million to do research and design. However, many pundits are agreeing with Trump now citing the $4 billion cost as too expensive.

Ditto for the Carrier deal and the Steelworkers union rep. Trump lied. He was called out and Trump retaliated by attacking the union rep, who has since had his life threatened.

This is Trump's style...bullying and threatening. Until the media starts calling him out in a big way instead of swooning after him, Trump will get his way. The media do not want to lose their seat at the table so they "go along" or ignore. I have seen little change in the media since his election. They still know that he is good for TV and follow his every word.

I maintain, however, that Trump's ties to Russia need to be investigated and exploited more. The media needs to make it the front page news for the next year, much like they did to Clinton's e-mails. Start calling him Putin's lapdog...much the same as he called Clinton, "Crooked Hillary". Repetition, repetition, repetition.

Yes Tony and Schmidt you guys see it correctly; but the point remains if these stupid uneducated "voters" keep cheering him and love deep muddy "swamps" then what are we going to do???? May be I'm simple minded; if they touch my "social" and life becomes too expensive here and the coal dust floats in the air as well basic needs become too expensive because of "tariff's" or "greed" from the "billionaires" I guess then the best bet is get the hell out of here and move elsewhere.

Are we not being more concerned about the messenger rather than the message? Just how did the leaks affect the election? Was it proven that these leaks regardless of the source was the undoing of Hilary's campaign? And if the leaks were the cause of Hilary's loss , was not the Media complicit in reporting false news stories , if in fact they were untrue? These are questions that needs to be answered before releasing any Government studies or investigations by any Government agency.

J.C. of course there where an lot of other elements playing an role as already discussed in other threads. Of course one of these was indeed the "media" who could not get enough of the "clown" running for President. If you look back at all the stupidity which came from his mouth and theatrics then in any "civil" country he never would have won. But yeah the uneducated half of the population loves "entertainment" and does not realize "reality" or accept "facts".

There was an good piece on Fareed about education here: we "scored" nr. 38, even Vietnam came in on "8th" ; thus in other words we (Dem's) lost because of the "education" in this country; I always said the education here needs an total review; sports and school buses have priority, instead of putting something into the brains of these kids which helps them to make the right choices in life; including voting for the right thing which helps their future.

J.C., Perhaps you would see the meddling destabilizing importance if your guy didn't get in. If the Russian govt. Gets too involved in anything important to us it should be deemed as crucial and important. R's are too busy giggling like 5th grade girls to even focus on the bigger picture.

Wrong assumption on your part regarding my "Guy", I often posted that neither candidate appealed to me, and as I already posted was the message wrong, "leaks " , if a lie or a hypocrisy was exposed , does it matter who the messenger was?

Comey is turning out to be a bad actor here...sharing every tidbit and engaging in innuendo about Clinton's e-mails at critical times in the campaign, but at the same time suppressing any revelations about Russia helping Trump in the election. Hopefully we will learn more about Comey's tactics before Obama leaves office. Once Trump and his cronies take office, the doors will be closed.

Trump being interviewed about Russia on the Sunday Talk show on why he doesn't believe the allegations about Russia:

Washington (AFP) - President-elect Donald Trump dismissed a brewing storm over Russian cyber meddling in the US election, rejecting as "ridiculous" US intelligence reports that Moscow tried to help him win the White House.

"I don't believe it," Trump said in a pre-recorded interview that was broadcast Sunday on Fox News.

"I think it's ridiculous," Trump said, putting it down as an attempt by Democrats to find an excuse for their embarrassing election loss.

"You know, I'm a smart person. I don't have to be told the same thing and the same words every single day for the next eight years."

Trump has said before that he knows more than the generals. Now he must be saying he knows more than the CIA spies and is dismissive of their daily briefings. How can that be? Does he have other sources of information coming to him from inside Russia? Or perhaps the Infowars website operated by Alex Jones? Or maybe is he just being Putin's lapdog?

    Who knows?

"I don't have to be told" says enough about this guy. But I think that he has connections "up there" via an Russian Sputnic" and direct contact with the "green blob" on Mars. Unbelievable!!!

I have been busy the last few days. The more I think about this the more it really pisses me off. He is discounting the input from intelligence agencies like the high paid parent who already gave their child their allotted 20 minutes of time. "Now get away from me".

Let's get this straight.... Intelligence agencies know far less than you when questioning the Russian inappropriate activities that got you elected but they are vital when colluding to damage your opponent days before the national election. You manipulative, game playing piece of $hit !!!!!!! Most see your childish methods and the deplorable's are back in their piece of crap houses living their wasted lives.

Journalists and politicians will not sit by silently like your Apprentice contestants. Down hill from this point forward you poor excuse for a human.

NBC nightly news, Lester Holt just said Russian cyber interference in our presidential election involved actions by Vladimir Putin. Glad he wasn't too busy. Started because he hates Hillary because she questioned legitimacy of a previous Russian election and a side benefit is discrediting the US election process. Glad he got his way. Sarcasm. Hopefully another member here will find a link and further what Mr. Holt just insinuated.
